Thank you for your interest to our music.

Last summer we held a throat singing camp in Tuva.

We had 14 students from around the world - 8 of them were from the US, 2 from Australia
2 from Denmark, 1 from France, 1 from England.
After arriving in Tuva, the students spent 1 week in Kyzyl, the capital city.
They were able to see many tourist attractions, see a Tuvan shaman,
and attend the Naadym - National Harvest Celebration.

The students then went on to spend 1 week in the deep taiga, with members of the Tuvan throat singing group Chirgilchin,
learning various styles of throat singing, traditional Tuvan instruments, as well as the Tuvan language.

This summer, we are trying to get 2 groups to go to Tuva again, in either June or July.

Please let me know if you have any further questions.

Please check out the THROAT CHAKRA.. and what it symbolizes..
http://www.chakramagic.com/throat_chakra.htm

Im translating from a Swedish site here 4 u:

The throat chakra..
IT IS THE GATE TO TIME AND SPACE...

Sanskritname Vishudda means "to purify" / To clean.
Vishudda is seen as the fifth chakra from below..

The fifth chakra is the throatchakra and it is united with the gland that regulates our energyresources.
The chakra has to do with the throat, the jaws, mouth, (dont know the name for the area where we swalllow) and our ears..

Both physically and psycic this chakra has to do with SOUND - therefore it is natural that the sense belonging to this chakra is to hear/listen, the sense that register sounds...

The throat chakra is the centre of expression, sounds and the capability to listen..
The throat chakra is just between the body and the head;
and often the head says one thing and the body and the emotions says another..

That is when when we end up in conflict with our self, and that is when the throat chakra determins
what will come to expression - the feeling or the reason...
(the "sense" haha as we call it, not our senses as in plural - interesting huh - my note)

Often the conflict between sense and our feelings are so big so we dont say anything at all,
then we block the energy very effectivly..
which will lead to stiff neck, pain in the throat, headache and how well we can process food
(dont remember the word, how much energy this gland in the throat is helping us balance out..)

Blockage in this chakra might lead to us finding life as dull and plain.. boring..
We cannot understand that others dont understand us.. our self..
You can often HEAR on others if their throat chakra is balanced or not,
the voice can be tense, high or relaxed and comfortable..

When there is a good activity in the throat chakra you can give expression to anything you feel,
and you find it easy to communicate with others..

The colour of the throat chakra is BLUE.

The place of the throat chakra symbolizes "the narrow road" -
from here, the individual path which demands us taking position, descisions;
which has to do with our TRUE LIFE MEANING...
Here our PERSONAL egos need for security and safety/controlneed is replaced with trust and conviction.
The higher self is given place/space.

The chakra has SIXTEEN crownleafs..
The symbolic animal is ELEPHANT..

Throat Chakra
Liquids in general: water, fruit juices, herbal teas
Tart or tangy fruits: lemons, limes, grapefruit, kiwi
Other tree growing fruits: apples, pears, plums, peaches, apricots, etc.
Spices: salt, lemon grass

(read more about how to heal your chakras with food and drink: http://healing.about.com/od/spiritualdiets/ss/feedchakras_6.htm )

Copied from Chakramagic - http://www.chakramagic.com/throat_chakra.htm

As the petals of the throat chakra open...

You enter into the space of "your highest" truth and creativity.
The throat chakra is an instrument with which we communicate with
the angels, masters, guides, the spirit world and the physical world.
Its basic function is expression and communication...
at many levels and all the formats.

Thought forms, internal dialogues, verbal and non verbal expression, art,
desires, intentions...are all different forms of communication .

Communication brings the desired results.
Imbalance at the throat chakra creates distorted communication.
And distorted communication is the root cause of all the struggles in life.

Once this is understood, and some effort is directed towards
opening the throat chakra, you step into your personal power - your core truth.
Truth liberates... And it's Your Truth that sets you free.

English name : Throat Chakra, also called the fifth chakra
Sanskrit name : Vishuddha
Location : Base of the throat
Color : Blue
Element : Sound
Directly affects : The spiritual body
Core functions : Communication, truth, sound, self expression, creativity

Challenges when throat chakra is not open or in balance :
Basically there are two types of chakra imbalances.

1. Spins fast, in excess, congestion, no harmony
Needless talking, listening disability, burnt out, fatigue, feeds on others attention, unaware liar.

2. Spins slow, deficiency, depletion, no harmony
Absence of authority, struggle in career - business, fear of speaking, speechlessness, negative internal dialogue, shy, unable to say the right thing at the right time.

Physical symptoms of throat chakra imbalance
Throat related problems, thyroid and neck challenges, lack of dynamism and motivation,

When the throat chakra is balanced :
Communicates easily, clearly and with authority, harmonious voice, closer to inner truth and creativity, developed artistic talents, influential.

// .... Copied from
http://www.spirit-alembic.com/throat.html

DEFINITION:
Identified as the THROAT Chakra or Aura-center by Yoga, this energy-plexus encompasses essentially the Throat, Mouth, Tongue, Nostrils and Jaw areas, any or all of which can become 'sore' or traumatized by a crisis over ONE'S PERSONALITY AND HOW TO "WEAR" IT. Since the Throat is housed in the Neck, the bones and muscles of the Neck and Shoulders also respond to Throat-Chakra crises.

This Chakra connects the physical body to the famous ASTRAL PLANE.. connected with 'out of body experiences' and Soul Travel as well as such Astral skills as distant-healing and Hypnosis. The Astral Plane is 'occupied' by the Astral Body of Asian Metaphysics, which the ancient Egyptians called "the Khu" (which means "Shining One" and "glorious Intelligence.") According to the Egyptians, this "body" is an eternal part of our makeup, and can travel about, visiting others on earth as well as the gods in their heavens. The Astral Plane like the Khu is named for the "Shining" or STAR-LIKE LIGHT which is it's appearance to the eye.
Any suggestions? Comments? Looping stories?

I also would love good mic suggestions the one that came with it won't do..

okay, i can't seem to get any answers anywhere else - maybe someone here can help me out.

i'm trying to build a setup that allows me to do the following:
1) play simple piano/organ sounds on a keyboard (weighted/non-weighted - doesn't matter)
2) trigger pitched samples (things I've recorded - glass hitting cement, armpit farts, the noises that come from my bathtub drain etc.) with keyboard keys (i.e. i record something, and then it is mapped on the keyboard so that when i hit the 'c' key, my sample is pitched accordingly, and likewise for all the other keys.)

i also want the sounds to come out of my PA speakers, so the keyboard must have the appropriate outputs (i.e. not just midi)

so what are my options if i was only willing to spend about $1500?
is there a keyboard for this price that will accomplish both tasks?
is it better to go with a keyboard + sampler setup? how do samplers work anyways? can i just throw a bunch of sounds into it and then trigger them (at different pitches) using a keyboard's midi or something?

thank you thank you thank you!

Hi there, I thought a little list of peoples equipment might give some ideas to the new artists in here, as well as spark some discussion about techniques of production...

so here's my list at the moment:

AKAI MPC1000 - Sequencing, Drum programming.
Great little machine for sampling, it's so easy to make great grooves with this box.

Ensonique ESQ-1 - Synthesis, Melody
Old school synth from the 80's, nice analog filter and 3 oscillators for some wild synth forms. Lots of fun to make patches with, good range of sounds.

Roland ALPHA JUNO-1
Another old school synth, lots of funky presets, and the PG-200 make programming patches a breeze. Fun funky sounds, lots of reminders of early trance/house.

TI Speak and Read (Ghazala Bends)
Built this one by the book, some great noises and hilarious loops. Actually sentient, it displays phrases like "I GAIA". How unusual! (take a look at my profile for pics). Unfortunately, it's also claims to be paranoid.

CD Recorder - Picked it up at a pawnshop for 100$, uses CD-RW's...really handy for recording those sets pre mix down.

Old "Alto" mixer, 8 tracks. Not worth mentioning, hopefully upgrading soon!
One very old Toshiba CD player, with no antiskip protection...useful for databending.

For FX, I have an Alesis AIRFX, sooooo much fun for getting those hand patterns gives you lots of creative control. Good filters, flangers. I also have an Alesis Microverb used in tandem for delay and reverb patches.

Right now, i'm actually working on an amazing find....

CASIO SK-100!!!!
I'm implementing a 32 point RCA patchbay, with assignable switches and potentiometers. The patches are directly connected to the internal 12-bit sampling RAM, and just testing out a few the leads made some insane and wild combinations. WO keyboard, WOOO!
I'll post some samples of this beautiful creation once it's finished....

So what is in your studio?

I unfortunately lost the contact info for the other 8 ppl that took the workshop with us here in portland...

if you are interested at all in audio or video creation and mixing and don't have thousands to spend on commercial, closed source software, this is really worth looking into. it is available for free at puredata.info. if u are familiar with max or reaktor, the interface will be almost intuitive for u, with objects "patched" together in a graphical environment which models the flow of commands. it is kind of hard to get off the ground (we're getting there), but once u do, u can do a lot with it.
if interested, join our tribe!

Hey all,

Last night i threw a house party as a benifit to support my house, which is a low income housing cooperative.

I learned a lot of things doing that show. I had broken the show into 2 parts. The first part was a mix of my pop stuff with other of my weird and esoteric tracks. The second half i just straight DJed a bunch of my dance tracks.

The second half was extremely fun, and i did ok keeping the dance floor going most of the night.

The first half was a living hell. I think (now) that my non-dance stuff doesn't translate well to live performance. I definitely felt the "what's he doing up there, checking his email?" vibe going on, and the whole thing felt kinda flat. I got a lot of feedback that people were wishing that the screen of my laptop had been projected up on the wall so they could see what the hell i was doing. I'm also thinking that the stuff i write that follows more traditional song structure is not very compelling without live vocals (maybe even with a hand drummer or something.)

Anyway, anybody have thoughts or idea's around live performance of laptop music? What do you do? What works?

Thanks,

We were working on a song about sorrow and life and I was deep into a freestyle about my own death and resurrection, and I saw myself saying the words, "as the darkness covers my eyes,". There was a loud explosion and an incense holder in the shape of a shamanic character that was not being used that my mother brought me from peru was flying across the room in pieces. There was a picture of Tupac behind it and tupac came floating down and landed right on the keyboard, staring at us with that intense stare like, WHAT! Chills went up my spine and we started freaking out and jumping up and down. Since then i've tried to make it a practice to invoke certain spiritual artists before i begin to write, especailly tupac and bob marley. Anybody else do this?
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Singing Saturn electric
Larry O'Hanlon
Discovery News

Weird radio broadcasts from Saturn, caused by the interaction between the solar wind and the planet's magnetic field, have been captured by the electronic ears of the Cassini spacecraft.

The loudest and most bizarre sounds are coming from the ringed planet's aurora, or northern and southern lights.

Dr William Kurth, of the University of Iowa, and team, report on the sounds of Saturn in the current issue of Geophysical Research Letters.

"Strangely enough, they are very similar to what we hear at Jupiter and Earth," says Kurth.

The reason for the similarity is that all three planets, along with Neptune, Uranus, Mercury and even Jupiter's moon Ganymede, generate their own magnetic fields that interact with charged particles steaming out from the sun.

When those particles are channelled to the magnetic poles of planets, they can create strange lights and other electromagnetic radiation, including radio waves.

"What's happening is all of the electrons bundle up together and spontaneously emit the electrical field" that is detectable as radio waves, says team member, Dr Don Gurnett, a pioneer of planetary radio emissions, also of the University of Iowa.

It's a truly weird thing, he says, and researchers aren't yet precisely sure how planetary magnetic fields are made.

Radio waves don't get through Earth's atmosphere

Jupiter has been known to broadcast its own radio emission since the early days of radio astronomy, says Gurnett.

But that's because Jupiter broadcasts in a wide range of frequencies, he said. Saturn sings the planet electric in a narrower band that doesn't make it through Earth's atmosphere.

Earth's own auroral radio emissions weren't detected until the late 1970s, says Gurnett.

That's because our own ionosphere, at the top of our atmosphere, filters out that particular band of radio waves.

The first time scientists discovered Saturn's radio emissions was when the Voyager spacecrafts made the first tours of the sixth planet back in 1980 and 1981.

At that time they were only able to record limited frequencies, listening and stepping up bands every few minutes.

In contrast, Cassini's instruments can get eight radio "spectrums" per second, says Kurth.

That makes for a far better resolution of what the planet is singing.

Saturn, says Kurth, turns into a planet-sized radio station when the charged solar wind flows and sort of bows Saturn's magnetic field.

That creates an emitter with one billion watts of power, he says. That's about 100,000 times more powerful than a well-equipped human-made radio station on Earth.

Besides just being eerie, the sounds of Saturn likely contain clues to the inner workings of Saturn that create the magnetic field, says Kurth.

Saturn's radio emissions could provide some clues to alien worlds as well, he says.

Already, team member Dr Philippe Zarka of the Paris Observatory in Meudon, France, has begun looking for similar radio signals from "hot" Jupiter-like planets orbiting other stars, says Kurth.

If or when he succeeds, it could reveal an unprecedented amount of detailed information about the structure of planets not yet seen in visible wavelengths.

WHAT THE REVIEWS ARE SAYING!!!!!!!

SMOTHER.NET
Blending urban sounds of dub with ethnic complex rhythms, Dub Gabriel’s “Bass Jihad” is a relentless assault on your body—you will have to dance the entire length of the album. Personally I love dub, though for a lot of folks it’s an acquired taste that most unfortunately aren’t willing to develop. But if you’re ever interested in hearing some of the best dub out there you must pick up this essential album. The songs swirl about in this cerebral musical landscape that boasts tremendous space while not feeling like it’s missing something. Production-wise the album is jaw-dropping with its low-end frequencies perfectly tweaked for even the worst speakers out there. I can’t complement this album enough; you have to hear it for yourself!

PASTE MAGAZINE
4 stars
Educated in the Laswellian school of bass-heavy
deconstruction,Brooklyn-based producer/DJ/four-stringer Dub Gabriel returns with another exploration of Arabic-leaning landscapes tuned to the sound of his namesake.
A confluence of warlike rhythms (hence the album
title) are ingeniously layered by an analog flurry of percussion, mizmar(reed pipe) and ney(Turkish flute). The 11-track record plays like a Kubrickian soundtrack
for future societies where all the world’s instruments are thrown into one circle and the orgy is conducted by none other than the archangel Gabriel himself.

DOWNTOWN MUSIC GALLERY
This is my man Dub Gabriel's second solo effort and again he's got it down. Our hero has worked with Bill Laswell, Qaballah Steppers, Baraka Orchestra and Samara Sound System. His first solo disc, 'Ascend' from last year was one of the few great dub efforts I've heard in recent memory. He is back again with a little help from Mark Deutsch on bazantar (an acoustic bass-like invention), Subluna on didgeridoo, Fred Stubbs on ney, Ahad Nazarzadeh on saz and a couple of MC's Young Sand and Khalil. Dub Gabriel is a strong producer, always doing an enchanting job of layering a swirling array of exotic percussion, cosmic snaking-charming double reeds, thick bass and mesmerizing echoed guitars and keyboards. This swell, sly music is mostly instrumental, the groove and ambiance always intoxicating. The occasional vocal bits are often sampled and used like another tasty ingredient in this mysterious and delectable stew. Yo Dub-mon, this sh*t is pretty ripe, supremely righteous and completely groovy! Word! – BLG
Intelligent MIDI Sequencing with Hamster Control

by Levy Lorenzo

Abstract:

This project was initially fueled by the desire to explore the MIDI protocol. It was decided that this would be accomplished by building a MIDI device. I also aimed to make something novel that had never been done before. But to balance out the unusual nature of its design, I wanted to also to create something that was very musical. After much consideration of different technical design aspects and contemplating various musical ideas, I was able to arrive at a project that would fulfill all of my musical and engineering goals. An intelligent MIDI sequencer was designed with hamster control. The MIDI sequencer intelligently produced melodies by manipulating the musical elements of rhythm and note-choice. Guided by inputs based on hamster movements, Markov chains were used to perform such beat and note computations. In culmination, 3 simultaneous voices were produced spanning 3 octaves and 3 rhythmic tiers. Each voice was controlled by two hamsters: one that was responsible for adjusting the rhythmic qualities of the melody and another that modified the note sequence. With all of these elements in combination, an output was produced with very musical qualities. All of this was implemented using an Atmel Mega32 microcontroller, distance sensors, a HamsterMIDI Controller, and 6 hamsters. Embedded C programming implemented the algorithms and computations within the sequencer.Overall, this project was successful. The control between the hamsters and the musical intelligence turned out very well. The music sounds as good as I imagined, and I am very satisfied with the outcome of my design experience.

"Csound is a programming language designed and optimized for sound rendering and signal processing. The language consists of over 450 opcodes - the operational codes that the sound designer uses to build "instruments" or patches. Although there are an increasing number of graphical "front-ends" for the language, you typically design and modify your patches using a word processor. Usually, you create two text files - a .orc (orchestra) file containing the "instruments," and a .sco (score) file containing the "notes." In Csound, the complexity of your patches is limited by your knowledge, interest, and need, but never by the language itself. For instance, a 22,050 oscillator additive synthesizer with 1024 stage envelope generators on each is merely a copy-and-paste operation. The same goes for a 1 million voice granular texture! Have you ever dreamed of sounds such as these? Well in Csound you can. And in Csound these dreams can come true!"

MIDI has always fascinated me. Particularily, i'm interested in remapping a signal through several devices, so the original signal comes out sounding nothing like the original, and instead sounds completely unreal and fantasically new.

I found a few interesting sites on the subject, this is a good site for MIDI related information: http://www.harmony-central.com/MIDI/

And the following software looks interesting in that direction:

ArborRhythms Music Processor

ARMP generates music using mathematical, linguistic, logical, musical, and
syntactic functions (60+). These functions are nodes in a hierarchical, binary-branching tree structure.

Midi Fish 1.0

- translate any note into any other note
- translate any MIDI controller into any other controller
- modify or invert controller ranges
- split each note into multiple zones based on controllers (eg. velocity)
- each zone has individual volume, output note, and output MIDI port
- gradual crossfade between zones
- simple, non-technical user interface, mostly controlled by MIDI

MidiOX: http://www.midiox.com/
Fractal Tune Smithy: http://tunesmithy.co.uk/

There are quite a few collaborative softwares out there as well...

LiveJam Alpha 2.0

Software for jamming live with people over the 'net using MIDI. (Musicians routing MIDI through devices, through the computer, and then through the internet into another computer, through their devices, through their computer and...)

Melodus 1.1.4

Melodus enables real-time, two-way streaming of MIDI. You can connect with other users to make, play, and share MIDI music online.

Let me know of your midi mapping experiments, success with certain software, unusual midi occurances, and any midi related technique you can think of that might benefit all of us who have ever wanted to see what happens when you switch the plugs around to a never seen combination and press the play button.

The first inventor, Chladni, did this with a bow and white sand on a black drum lid. It can apparently be done with a cardboard tube pointed at the drum to vocalize word sounds onto to the drum, which results in some rather odd patterns when sanskrit or hebrew names are recited.

OM ends up appearing as the Sri Yantra.

Does anyone know of a software version of this? I might give it a shot with CSound even though I know next to nothing about programming.
Looking up the tonoscope also lead me to Cymatics, the study of how vibrations, generate and influence patterns, shapes and moving processes.

As I was writing a post on tribe, I recalled on old post on a humour forum that had read. The post was authored by the son of a Russian scientist, a scientist who had apparently created a machine that created music entirely based on the brain waves that humans put off. Pictures were provided of the device with the son inside, and he replied later to the thread saying he would get recordings of the music for the rest of the forum readers. Apparently, his first experience in the chair had been a mind blowing experiencing, putting him in a trance and instantly having music that would interact with his thought patterns. The equivalent of staring into a mental mirror.

He never returned to the thread.

So, if a being were to embark on such an adventure as CREATING A DEVICE THAT MAKES MUSIC IN RELATION TO BRAIN WAVES, what subjects would they have to be versed in? What way would you do it? Software? Hardware? What kind of sensors?

I think I just might give it a go. I have so many projects on the run right now, but having a grand one to strive for would be fun.

I've found a neat way to get really chaotic sounds out of my synth (Virus C) by crashing it with an overload of midi data.

I could only imagine what this would do to a sampler.

First of all get yourself a copy of a good modular midi program such as PD, max/msp, supercollider, csound, etc...

and patch together something to send huge amounts of patch changes at a very high rate. This makes the Virus spit out some VERY interesting sounds before it crashes, and I can only imagine what it would do with a sampler =)

I'll upload an mp3 of my muddling with this later on (ie: when I find it)
each have a computer music studio in our house (we don't even have a dining room table any more because of it.....lol).

Anyway, she is a meticulous digital editor and during one of her last projects, she was dealing with a musician she had recorded who had less than perfect timing.

Consequently, in an attempt to micro edit the recording into shape she spent hours and hours cutting out little blips or re-EQing them. I was sitting in the other room working on my next CD and I kept hearing these glitchy little artifacts that she was working on completely out of context of the piece. I kept popping my head in the room and saying.........would you save that snippet for me........what a cool sample.

Now she just keeps an Artifacts for Rick folder on her desktop and if she hears a snippet when I'm not around that she thinks would interest me, she just saves it there.

When I'm stuck in a piece or unsure if I should add another element to something (I'm a bit of a minimalist, compositionally) I can frequently go to that folder and the perfect random element is already there waiting to be used.

It's amazing how frequently I find something useful out of this technique.

PS if anyone is still reading this.........please come over and join the Audio Plugin Junkies Annonymous tribe. We are talking about a lot of similar techniques of randomness in plugins, like the fascinating SupaTrigga.

We also started an AudioPluginJunkiesAnnonymous@yahoogroups.com
so that we can upload and download examples of the techniques that we are discussing (or even loops to share). I would love to suggest that this very hip tribe to the exact same thing. I"d love to hear some of these very cool techniques you are describing, Volo and everyone else.

Glad to be hear.........thanks for this wonderfully creative tribe. I'll bring some creative people here after I finish posting this.

One time when I was recording some percussion samples with a very sensitive microphone (and an ADAT in the other room), I forgot to bring the remote into the room, so I just kept sampling percussion instruments and kept the tape rolling.

Well, at one point, I stumbled over a bag of percussion instruments and it made the coolest sample.

I immediately, stopped what I was doing and purposefully loaded up the percussion back with different sets of percussion instruments and dropped them randomly on the ground.

Playing through each 'sample' I discovered really cool artifacts that I turned into loops.

A surprising number of these events (if time stretched) had naturally occuring pieces that sounded like perfect triplet or 16th note syncopations.

You can use this technique to with any set of objects in a big bag. Or try dropping a whole set of silver ware on the ground over and over.............great random stuff.
