okay, i can't seem to get any answers anywhere else - maybe someone here can help me out.
i'm trying to build a setup that allows me to do the following:
1) play simple piano/organ sounds on a keyboard (weighted/non-weighted - doesn't matter)
2) trigger pitched samples (things I've recorded - glass hitting cement, armpit farts, the noises that come from my bathtub drain etc.) with keyboard keys (i.e. i record something, and then it is mapped on the keyboard so that when i hit the 'c' key, my sample is pitched accordingly, and likewise for all the other keys.)
i also want the sounds to come out of my PA speakers, so the keyboard must have the appropriate outputs (i.e. not just midi)
so what are my options if i was only willing to spend about $1500?
is there a keyboard for this price that will accomplish both tasks?
is it better to go with a keyboard + sampler setup? how do samplers work anyways? can i just throw a bunch of sounds into it and then trigger them (at different pitches) using a keyboard's midi or something?
thank you thank you thank you!

Re: farting in the key of E
Fri, November 10, 2006 - 5:48 AMHi Jesse...there are a few very realistic and cheap alternatives for pitching samples along a keyboard....
1) The Casio SK series.
These little keyboards from the 80's can be found every day on Ebay, but can also be found at second hand stores across the continent. I picked myself up an SK-100, and have a ridiculous amount of fun with it. SK-1, SK-5 and SK-8's are all fantastic samplers that can be obtained for cheap, although because they are so good for circuit bending, you may find the price will be around 50$
2) Ensoniq's Mirage Keyboard
In Montreal, I have seen about 5 or 6 of these keyboards go for sale this year. An older sample keyboard, but it will work fantastically for any kind of sampling application. Make sure you get the operating systems disks! Usually sales for 75-150$
3) Korg Triton
Usually around 1500$, so unless you are a signed gangster hip hop producer, who drinks champagne every day and drives around in a rolls royce, I suggest another method...! That reminds me, I saw a synclavier auction on matrixsynth the other day....talk about your dream sampler. matrixsynth.blogspot.com
I do suggest taking a look around vintagesynth.com's message board and craigslist as well as ebay, if you are looking for used gear.
I personally own an AKAI, mpc sampler and have been enjoying my purchase to the nth degree. This sampler can sequence, chop, stretch, effect, tune, and is incredible for making beats on...it will cost you about 1000$ www.akaipro.com
