I purchased a M-Audio 24/96 bit Microtrack Recorder about two months ago and have been sampling like mad, however I've yet to begin looping with it...
Any suggestions? Comments? Looping stories?
I also would love good mic suggestions the one that came with it won't do..
I usually drop my recordings into Logic Pro 7 and begin fun there. How about into Ableton or Sound Forge, Acid Pro?
I'd love some feedback

Re: M Audio Microtrack Recorder - looping potential Mic query
Mon, October 30, 2006 - 5:35 AMHi Johnathon!
Congratulations on your microrecorder...must be fun to record sounds out in the natural enviroment, and its probably great for jamming out with yoour friends.
In regards to your looping...do you plan to use software? or hardware?
I have a couple loop devices that are really fun right now. I have a jamman loop pedal, very cool for live keyboards and situations where you're making music as it comes to you. The main sampler/looping hardware I use is an AKAI MPC 1000, which is _INCREDIBLE_ for looping! the possibilities with this machine are endless, I highly suggest the mpc series.
In regards to microphones, it really depends what situation you are recording in the most. There are a lot of good mics out there for specific purposes. The one that I would suggest, affordable, rugged, and very utilitarian, is the Shure SM57. Best all around mic that can be bought for around 100$.
for the software, logic is fun and many things can be done with it...I do find it a bit involved, and much prefer ableton live for my looping (so simple to use, and many many options for creating sounds), and for everything else, I swear by protools. By far the best program out there!
Acid is a little too simple for me, and Sound Forge is just a wave editor, can't really sequence anything with it.
Have fun :) -

Yeh i fiddled with one of tha Akai Mpc 1000's at a music store. I didn't know how it worked though. As far as the purpose for my mic goes I'm into recording potentially loud situaltions, like a dj which didn't go all that well my first try - I had to stand way back.
The SM57 is around my price range - I'll check it out. 'm also into soundrecording nature - crickets, thunderstorms, city traffic etcc... Which goes well but would be likely better if i had a mic suited to the purpose..
All this is for Logic Pro 7 by the way. I mess with the samples in there and have blast. Logic is a universe without end - I love it;...
What kind of music you make? And what you do with that thingamabob I saw the photo of early.
Take It easy.

All equipment takes a little while to get used to...best to find something that suits your needs by trying it out with a friend. Best to rent one for a while or find someone who has one!
IIn regard to recording a dj, it's best to use the ctrl room output, or to place your recorder inbetween the mixer and the amplifier, that way you have a direct connection to the recording at line level. I make lots of music, still learning...I make trip hop, hip hop, house and drum and bass....The incantor, or circuit bent speak and spell just makes fun chirps and loops for putting together with music. :) -
